Two days

ago I hit the three week mark.  I’m not sure if I’m getting into a habit or if I’ve just started focusing more on basic things, but the days seem to be flying by.

While I haven’t been keeping up with the specific mileage, I also realized that I am well over the 1000 mile mark, which in itself is very much hard to believe.  Since picking up the ACA route in Defuniak Springs Florida, I’ve traveled about 820 miles, which doesn’t include my time spent in the state of Alabama/Georgia.

I’m currently in Navasota TX, which is about 100 miles north west of Houston and maybe about 150 miles east of Austin.  Because of the need to stay on some kind of Farm/County/Country Road, I’ll be heading further south this afternoon – La Grange – and then back up a little north to reach Austin.  West of Austin it’s pretty much no man’s land.  The ACA maps are broken down into 40 mile sections, each of which allocates gas-stations/camp sites/etc within this range.  For the sections west of Austin there’s pretty much nothing  – except a note saying “no services for the next 50 miles…” which means no bathrooms, water, food, etc, etc.  I gather it’s relatively flat, which should help in the end, but something nice to look forward to.

So far, my time spent in TX has been very nice.  I’m going to stop by the local barrister’s office this morning for a look-see as some of the old maps of Navasota.  The town is full of history - BROAD ranging.

H.B.W. (Home Base Wiegand) contacted the fine folks at Empire BMX for reciept of a care package upon mine arrival in Austin which should be a in a few days – depending on the weather, etc.   I guess a bicycle tour of any kind wouldn’ t be complete without a chance to see Empire with my own eyes – maybe too I can have a chat with Tom about the pinkish/purple shirt he sent out a few months back.  I’m just sorry I couldn’t figure out a way to rig up my T-1 for the trip so it could see it’s birthplace as well…

Many thanks Nick and Kiisa for handling this.

Cheers,
