Bastrop is a neat town, not too big, not terribly small. As quasi-outpost for Austin, there’s a fair amount of traffic running east and west.
Yesterday, I had given some thought to making the trip to downtown Austin. The route itself is fairly basic, ton of hills, country side, etc. However, with the pending rainstorm yesterday evening, I decided against it. The folks at the RV park here in Bastrop were good enough to put me up again for the evening – tonight – so the plan is to move toward Austin in the morning.
Originally, I had planned to stay in Austin for a few days, but I am thinking one should be more than enough. Carrying everything that you think is important on a bicycle makes “hanging out” almost impossible and at that, I am really interested in getting through – or OVER – Texas as quickly as I can.
As I mentioned before, being around a major city is daunting for a number of reasons – traffic, traffic, and traffic lights – not too mention the amount of random people. For those that may feel that “small town America” is also “slow-town America,” might I suggest a rolling trip through Texas. The smaller the town, the faster the speed.
The am0unt of hills/mountains west of here is something that I am concentrating on more and more.
Outside of that, I am VERY interested in doing some loose research on Pres. Lyndon Johnson’s hometown/community- more on that hopefully later. If anything, I want to get an idea of where he grew up. Also, too, some guy by the name of Lance Armstrong lives around there too, so that may prove equally fruitful.
The weather should move itself further east by this afternoon, which would be a nice help. Camping and riding in the rain aren’t bad – but packing a tent in the rain is not all that much fun,
Also, N. Wiegand was good enough to put together a running google map of my stops – thanks man. I’ve inserted it to the “so far” page.
Cheers,
