every mans life when turning single makes sense. For those of you whom I know away from this website, you’re well aware that I am single; given that my bike at this point is very muhc an extension of my true self (see Kant), it make sense (no really I guess it doens’t) that the bike following accordingly.
So yesterday the spoke in question pull completely through the rim, which suffered even more of a crack – from riding up hill. Weird sound, complete with a rim that rub the frame - fun, fun, fun.
Fortunately for me I was on my way to Truly Spokin in Pensacola.
Saying thank-you based on my treatment there would make no sense: – let me put it this way: When was the last time you left a bikeshop feeling guilty about how much you DID NOT spend? And I am not talking about the played-out “shop hook up” that ever kid in Atlanta wants… I walked/rode away from there with a new wheel, new chain, new sprocket, new tube, and the best install job ever for less than you spend for a movie and dinner. Mark, you are a Godsend. If you’re in need of repairs and live in Atlanta, it’s worth the drive!
So as for the single part – no more gears. Yup, fully one speed from here on out. I haven’t stopped pedaling since I left Atlanta, so it really is not that much of a difference. Plus I have normal wheel bolts which means that i can slap a peg on one side and try and icepick slide the T-1 ramp if I ever get out of Florida.
The one saving grace in all of this is that I am in what is probably the hottest, most beautiful part of Florida- currently, at Big Lagoon. While it’s been very difficult to relaxing for fear of something else breaking, I have tried the last two days to force myself to relax. Last evening I laid out on a picnic-table for about an hour in the middle of nowhere. I imagine if I had paid better attention in Elementary, Middle and High School I would be able to identify which star is which. There’s something to be said looking up. It can be extremely emotional when your world’s biggest problem 5 hours ago disappears after a few deep breathes.
On my way back into Alabama. The plan is to try and make it to Dauphin Island by this afternoon.
